Congress Hall is a historic hotel located in the Cape May, New Jersey National Historic District. It occupies a city block between Perry Street and Congress Avenue to the east and west, and Beach Avenue and Congress Place to the north and south. It has been a popular venue for tourists since it was constructed in 1816. It was completely rebuilt in brick within one year after the original structure burned to the ground in 1878. In 1882, The United States Marine Band made its first appearance there under the leadership of John Philip Sousa. Having been invited by the proprietors of the hotel, Sousa returned the compliment by composing this march and dedicating it to the owners H. J. and G. R. Crump. This new arrangement is scored for modern concert band and keeps the form and structure of the original Sousa composition. An optional tacet occurs for cornets and trombones in the first strain of the Trio. Your band musicians will enjoy playing this beautiful march time and time again!
