Daniel C. D. Brown
Into the Wind was written depicting the idea of a bird in flight. The music takes the performers through peaks and valleys in both a literal and figurative sense. The melody and counter melody of the first theme are passed around between the upper winds and upper brass, so it is important to have a proper balance between the sections. The low winds and low brass parts prove to be invaluable by providing a strong harmonic foundation for the melodic instruments to play above. The snare drum and tambourine parts will prove to be challenging for your percussionists, as they both present driving rhythmic ideas that give the piece lots of energy.
The second section provides a calmer picture of our creature in flight. The clarinets provide a flow that provides a peaceful yet flowing continuation to our journey. A solo trumpet introduces the new theme. It is my hope that your performer will experiment with expressionism throughout this section. More melodic instruments take the melody before a section occurs that provides some "head wind." Within this section, I hope that your ensemble finds the subtle tension, which will release with a repeat of the original second theme. This section concludes with a peaceful descent through the use of the written instrumentation. The percussion section revives the energy that was created in the beginning of the piece, with the ensemble returning to the first theme. Each melodic instrumental section will have an opportunity to repeat the opening of the first theme. I hope they make their presence felt! Into the Wind concludes with a flourish, giving a final climax to our journey.
