Ryan J. Williams
Ryan J. Williams has been composing and arranging music since high school. He has composed numerous works for chamber groups, wind band, and orchestra. He has also received commissions for works that have been performed by students of all ages, ranging from elementary school beginners through collegiate performance majors. As a composer, Williams joined the staff of CWJ Music House and his works can be found for sale through J.W. Pepper. His work as an arranger consists of writing for more than a dozen competitive and non-competitive high school and college bands over the last ten years. Additionally, Ryan has been on the instructional staff for the Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps, serving as the tuba technician since 2012 and contributes to the musical book for the drum and bugle corps. Outside the world of the marching arts, Mr. Williams also serves in the United States Army Reserve, as an instrumentalist, conductor, and writer with the 78th Army Reserve Band from Fort Dix, New Jersey. After enlisting with the then-307th Army Reserve Band in 2002, Ryan has written numerous arrangements that have been performed for audiences numbering in the hundreds of thousands all over the country.
To flesh out his craft, Williams most recently attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina, earning his Doctor of Musical Arts in composition and music theory. He also attended West Chester University where he earned his Master of Music Theory and Composition in 2014 and his Bachelor of Music in 2003. Throughout his study, Williams has worked with Robert Maggio, Adam Silverman, Andrew Yozviak, Armando Bayolo, Marc Sabat, John Fitz Rogers, Reg Bain, Danny Jenkins, and David Garner. Currently, Williams receives commissions for all levels of music, ranging from beginning students and middle school band to professional musicians. His works have been performed across the Eastern United States and have been described as “a cut above the rest” and “sophisticated” by American composer and conductor Mark Camphouse. In addition to composition, Williams is a performer and technician. After five years performing with DCA and DCI drum & bugle corps, he enlisted into the Army Reserve where he served as an instrumentalist, arranger, and composer for 14 years. Since earning a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from York College in 2005, Williams has worked with dozens of competitive and non-competitive high school bands, college bands, and drum corps across the country. Williams has served as a brass instructor for the Hawthorne Caballeros, the 2015 World Champion Reading Buccaneers, The Cadets, and the Boston Crusaders. For 2020 he will join the Blue Stars from LaCrosse, Wisconsin as the Assistant Brass Caption Head. As a writer and designer, he works with the Starriders Drum and Bugle Corps from Bad Münder, Germany and the Spirit Drum Corps from Newark, New Jersey. In addition to writing and teaching, Williams is active as an adjudicator, serving marching bands across the country.
Presently, Williams lives in Texas as a band director, composer, and media producer while struggling to keep a small collection of houseplants alive.
